Anthony, third pug of three, snorts his way around the house, tail curled tightly. He shoulder bumps Max out of the way, then stops as Alexis gives him the evil googly eye. With a huff, Anthony walks around her into the bedroom. His sits, butt only grazing the floor, as he stares at his mommy. She smiles and hefts him onto the bed. He walks to the end where Daddy is emptying his pockets. With a nudge, Anthony coaxes a scratch behind the ears from daddy while he tosses his loose change on the bedspread.
Now that, Anthony thinks, looks delicious.
After daddy walks out, Mommy turns around to see the last nickel vanish into Anthony's mouth. Some shouting follows, making Anthony nervous, but he's reassured by back and chest rubs. He lifts a chubby paw, shifting his center of gravity, and plops on his back, awaiting the hand on his belly. More discussion, Anthony picks out his name, the word eat, then hears the jingling of his leash. He's on his feet with surprising agility. He sees his harness.
Car ride!
Anthony sits on mommy's lap in the passenger seat, the vent blowing cool air onto his face. Soft words, gentle head massage, look at the trees going by. When they all get out, Anthony realizes this is a new place, not the usual building with doggie toys and happy people in blue shirts. A man in scrubs takes Anthony into the back, shining a light on him. After a long time, Anthony is brought to an examination room. Mommy and daddy are waiting. It must be time to go home, but nobody's leaving.
"You can see them," the man says, pointing at the shining picture on the wall.
"Oh my God," says Mommy. "A whole stack of change!"
"We should have named him CoinStar," says Daddy.
More quiet discussion, Anthony wonders what this "two thousand dollars" is that Daddy is upset about. After a little more talking, the stranger takes Anthony back inside.
I thought I was going home.
The next morning, Anthony wakes up feeling queasy with a sore throat. More strangers give him water, lots of it. More and more until his belly is full. Then, finally, Mommy and Daddy arrive. This time, he really is going home.
"We removed them without surgery," the doctor said. "Four quarters, two dimes and two nickels. Then we gave him fluids so he can pass the rest."
Daddy gave Anthony a pat.
"Hey buddy," he said. "Can I have change of a dollar?"
Careful what you wish for, Daddy.
